On the weekend of 28 February/1 March 2026, Dr. John Fung will be offering a workshop in Bonn entitled ‘The 12 Keys’.
„The 12 Keys“
The 12 keys refer to three principles, each consisting of four characters:
1) „Contact, Adhere, Unite, Follow“ (沾黏連随 zhān nián lián suí)
These skills are at the heart of all Tai Chi partner exercises. Ancient Tai Chi writings explicitly refer to the importance of these subtle skills, e.g. written by Yang Banhou.
2) Relax, Disperse, Connect, Empty (鬆散通空 sōng sàn tōng kòng)
This concept originates specifically from the older Yang style according to Wang Yongquan. It is used both in solo form practice and in partner exercises. In solo form, it ensures deep relaxation and connection. When in contact with a partner, it ensures that the partner finds no point of contact and encounters emptiness.
3) Listen, Ask, Seize, Release (聽聞拿放 tīng wén ná fàng)
These principles by Wang Yongquan refer to contact with a partner. They enable techniques to be applied even in non-cooperative situations. Aspects such as listening with the energy field or provoking a reaction, etc. play a role here.
Further planned topics are:
– Rolling Hands (揉手 róu shǒu): Partner exercises of the older Yang style comparable to ‘Pushing Hands’ (推手 tuī shǒu).
– Anatomical sealing points
– Technical comparison between solo form and sword form (sword form skills are not required)
